What is the general priority order for FPS?

  1. Resolution and upscaling — render at native if you can; if the game offers an upscaling/sharpness option, it is usually the best FPS-per-quality trade.
  2. Shadows — typically the biggest single GPU cost; drop one tier first.
  3. Volumetrics / fog — expensive in dark, atmospheric games like AFE2.
  4. Effects / particle density — matters in Horde Mode when the screen fills with Xenomorphs.
  5. Textures — set to what your VRAM allows; exceeding VRAM causes stutter, not just lower FPS.
  6. View distance / LOD — modest cost, lower if needed.

What about frame pacing and display?

  • Use exclusive fullscreen if offered.
  • Cap FPS at or just below your refresh rate for smooth pacing.
  • Enable VRR (G-Sync / FreeSync) at the driver level if your monitor supports it.

What if you are CPU-bound?

Four-player co-op with hordes of enemies can be CPU-heavy. If lowering graphics does not raise FPS, lower crowd/effects density settings and close background apps.
